Grief can feel like an endless maze, trapping us in pain and confusion. Many people find themselves stuck, unsure how to move forward or find peace. Inspired by a unique approach to solving cold cases, I developed a method to help people navigate grief with grace, peace, and harmony. This method is called the 8 Stones, a practical guide to healing that draws from the wisdom of the Buddhist Eightfold Path. Each stone represents a step toward resolution and freedom from the weight of grief.
In this post, I will share the 8 Stones and explain how each one can support your journey through loss. Whether you are grieving yourself or supporting someone who is, these stones offer a clear path to healing.

Stone 1: Talk About Grief Any Time and Any Place
Grief often feels like a private burden. Many grievers only feel safe discussing their feelings in therapy sessions, support groups, or annual memorial events. This stone encourages breaking that silence. Talking about grief openly, whenever and wherever you feel the need, helps normalize the experience and reduces isolation.
Example: Sharing your feelings with a close friend during a walk or writing about your grief in a journal at a café can be powerful ways to express emotions without waiting for a formal setting.
Stone 2: Embrace Grief As An Ally
Grief is usually seen as a heavy burden or an enemy to overcome. This stone invites you to see grief as an ally—a guide that helps you understand your love, loss, and what matters most. Accepting grief as part of your life’s journey can transform pain into growth.
Example: EJ, a writer who lost a loved one, described grief as a companion that taught him patience and deepened his empathy for others.
Stone 3: Replace Anger With Grace
Anger is a natural response to loss but can become destructive if it lingers or turns into bitterness. This stone encourages expressing anger in healthy ways but then choosing grace—kindness toward yourself and others—as a lasting response.
Example: Instead of holding onto resentment, try channeling anger into creative outlets like painting or physical activity, then practice forgiveness when you are ready.
Stone 4: Practice Mindful Presence
Grief often pulls us into the past or worries about the future. This stone focuses on mindfulness—being fully present in the moment. Mindfulness helps reduce anxiety and allows you to experience your feelings without judgment.
Example: Simple breathing exercises or mindful walks in nature can ground you and provide moments of calm amid emotional turmoil.
Stone 5: Build Supportive Connections
Healing is rarely a solo journey. This stone highlights the importance of building and maintaining supportive relationships. Surround yourself with people who listen without judgment and offer comfort.
Example: Joining a grief support group or reconnecting with old friends can create a network of understanding and care.
Stone 6: Create Meaningful Rituals
Rituals help honor your loss and provide structure during chaotic times. This stone encourages creating personal or shared rituals that bring comfort and meaning.
Example: Lighting a candle on anniversaries, planting a tree in memory, or writing letters to your loved one can be powerful acts of remembrance.
Stone 7: Focus on Self-Care and Compassion
Grief can drain your energy and self-esteem. This stone reminds you to care for your body and mind with compassion. Nourish yourself with rest, healthy food, and activities that bring joy.
Example: Taking a warm bath, reading a favorite book, or practicing gentle yoga can restore your strength and spirit.
Stone 8: Cultivate Hope and Forward Movement
Healing does not mean forgetting. This stone encourages cultivating hope and taking small steps toward a future where grief coexists with peace. Setting new goals or exploring new interests can help you move forward.
Example: Volunteering for a cause you care about or learning a new skill can create a sense of purpose and renewal.
Grief is a complex and deeply personal experience. The 8 Stones offer a practical and compassionate framework to help you build a path through grief with grace, peace, and harmony. By talking openly, embracing your feelings, practicing mindfulness, and nurturing connections, you can find resolution and freedom from being stuck.
