Michelle Ferris, who lost her son Corban in 2020 after he drowned in a lake, hosted a birthday party last night to celebrate what would have been his 25th birthday. She decided to plan a gathering with relatives and friends to remember and honor him.
“I always wonder and feel anxious as time goes forward with grief. If I invite people, will they come and show up?" Michele exclaimed in her mind.
Of course they will!
Last night, people showed up, and it was a special night for Michele’s mama's heart.
It's okay to celebrate your loved one's birthday after he or she died. If you don't ask you don't get. Great job Michelle!

Michelle hosting this event for Corban is also another example of how to regenerate happiness and diminish sadness. It’s the fifth of eight stones to help a griever build a path to breaking the silence and healing with grace, peace, and harmony. You can read about the 8 stones in my upcoming "Let's Talk Grief" that will debut on May 15th.
Michelle hosting Corban's birthday party is also an example of how secondary grievers can practice empathy for a primary griever.
Thank you to all the people who showed up and practiced empathy for Michelle!
Happy 25th Birthday Corban!
